Surge Protection Reference Standards

AS1768-1991 = lightning protection for buildings and other structures.
This should not be used in place of a surge protection standard.  This should be primarily used for safety purposes to prevent entry of lightning into the building.

AS 4070-1992 = for the protection of cabling and equipment insulation in MEN installations from transient voltages exceeding 2500 V.  Based on IEC60664.
This should not be used to protect electronic equipment.
This should be used primarily to prevent damage to cable insulation.

IEC61643-1 = for the surge protection of connected 240V/415V (LV) equipment.
There is no current Australian standard for Surge Protection Devices.  This IEC standard is currently under review for adoption by Standards Australia.  In this case, the IEC international standard is the next ACCEPTABLE standard for use in Australia.  Independant confirmation of this is possible via Standards Australia 1300 654 646.
This standard should be primarily used to prevent damage to connected equipment

Performance parameters tested to:

    • Maximum Continuous Operating Voltage shall be 280VAC = Uc (Line to Neutral voltage).
    • Voltage Protection Level (Up) shall not exceed 850V when tested to Class II at 5kA per IEC61643-11
    • Voltage Protection Level (Up) shall not exceed 800V when tested to Class III at 5kA, During this test the Uoc =10kV. Uoc=10kV when tested to IEC61643-11
    • Tested to Longwave 10/1000μs at 250A as per IEEE C62.41.2 and C62.45.

Components:
SPDs shall consist only of non degrading Silicon Avalanche Suppressor Diodes. The SPD power suppressors shall be replaceable and upgradeable to a higher rating value, without turning power off, tools or skills.

Installation Practices:
For DIN SPD’s a 20A upstream circuit breaker must be installed for protection and isolation of the SPD. Supply to the SPD may be via a circuit breaker or a fuse isolator combination. Cabling to the SPD shall have the largest bending radius possible and with the minimum number of bends and shall be at minimum distance possible (< 1m). Cabling to the SPD shall be more than 6mm2 diameter.

Marking:
Should be consistent with IEC 61643-1.

Monitoring of SPD:
First local LED will show power is ON.  Second local LED will show operational status. Relay for remote monitoring shall be incorporated. The relay shall be rated to operate to 3A 230VAC.
