Fluctuations
Voltage Fluctuations can be caused by:
- Voltage Dips
- Supply Instability
- Power Factor issues, and
- Triplen
For information on any of these variables not discussed below please contact us for more information.
Power Factor
Power Factor = Watts (heating energy) / Apparent Power (VxA)
Attaining Unity power factor means operating with least waste. Simply adding Power Factor Capacitors will not always correct a poor power factor!
Q. Why?
A. Most loads create harmonic noise. Power Factor influenced by harmonics CANNOT be corrected using capacitors. In fact more energy will be wasted and the power factor will become worse. This means that both Harmonic Filters and Power Factor capacitors must be used to reduce wasted energy.
Triplen
An extra problem in three phase systems is where the neutral carries sometimes more current than any of the three phases. This occurs where the harmonics flowing into the neutral do not cancel but in reality ADD.
Typically this type of current is known as the TRIPLEN.
This is due to noise being made up of frequencies that are multiples of three to the fundamental 50Hz supply. |
